Housewives were encouraged to make meals from very little and to prepare substitutes for foods that were scarce. Edith used to make up a dessert from Cremola and call it "Rice Cream". She made mock bananas from parsnips and banana flavouring and "tinned" pears from fresh pears boiled in lemonade.
