The Opawa The Opawa was an iron ship,launched in Glasgow in 1876 and registered in London.A five year contract was made with the New Zealand Government for the carriage of emigrants was made in 1877 and two years later it was the ship on which George Newton,his family and future wife and family travelled to start a new life in a new country.
The ship met its end on the 14th March 1917 when it was sunk by gunfire from a U53
