Luckily Beckenham was a few miles away from the scene described but Pat Turner remembers watching the terrible fires as they lit up the whole skyline.
The family watched from the window from where they had watched the Crystal Palace fire some years before.Then they realised that they had better go down to the shelter.

St Denys Church where Charlotte Barnes and her sister Naomi were christened on 21st December 1831. The original shingle covered spire was destroyed in the hurricane of 1987.

St Mary's Church at Over Silton where Michael Kay was christened in May 1827. His father was a local coalminer called Thomas Groves who later married another woman. His mother was Mary Kay born in 1808 and daughter of John Kay and Margaret Hall who were married there. Over Silton and Kepwick are on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and this church served both communities.

St Peter's Church.William Griggs died aged 59 at Newton in New South Wales,Australia and was buried at the nearby cemetery of St Peter's.
William and his brother James were convicted for sheep stealing in Cambridgeshire and transported for life to Australia. He was second great granduncle to Rosalie and Pat Turner.
