John was born in the East End of London but made his life in Papua,New Guinea where he was known as John Bolser. He was killed in a mine explosion in 1898 but news of his death did not reach his family for many years.

After the performance a collection was taken for the "Aid to Russia" fund. This is the letter of thanks received by Clementine Churchill.

Housewives were encourage to mend clothes rather than replace them,to turn sheets "sides to middles" when they became worn and to generally use every scrap of material already owned rather than to buy new. Dorothy was expert at this and Pat and Rosalie received several wonderful new dresses made from the cuttings of dresses made for her shop "Janet's".
